Understanding the Herpes Simplex Virus
The herpes virus is something that goes by many different names while its formal names are just the Herpes Simplex Virus, Types one and two or HSV1, HSV2 . You might also hear it referred to as:
- Herpes culture
- Herpes simplex viral culture
- HSV DNA
- HHV1
- HHV2

Herpes Testing
Testing for herpes is done to detect the presence of herpes simplex with those people that have genital sores, babies thought to have neonatal herpes, encephalitis or outbreaks in other areas. Neonatal herpes is rare but is a very serious condition where herpes is contracted by the newborn during birth. A woman that is pregnant and has herpes should be monitored often before delivery to make sure that the infection isn’t reactivated and given to the newborn during birth. In order to eliminate the risk of spread it’s likely a C-Section will be done.
The principal testing methods for the herpes simplex virus are the herpes culture and the HSV DNA testing. While it’s not as sensitive the antibody testing for HSV is able to be used in order to help diagnose a more acute infection. This is done through blood sample collection of both acute and convalescent samples. The acute sample is done first and then the convalescent sample is done several weeks afterward. The antibody levels are then compared to be able to see how far they’ve risen which would be indicative of a current infection.
Herpes Test Ordering
Herpes cultures are ordered usually when the patient is showing either a vesicle or blister on the genitals. The HSV DNA testing is done with the patient has encephalitis and the doctor believes that it might be caused by a virus.
HSV testing for pregnant women are going to be ordered regularly and the newborn and the mother will be tested when the newborn shows signs of infection like lesions on the skin or meningitis.
The antibody testing for HSV is going to be ordered most often when the patient is being screened for prior exposure to HSV. At some points convalescent and acute antibody HSV testing would be ordered when there are thought of a current infection.
Meaning of Results
When you get a positive result through one of the tests will indicate that you have a current HSV1 or HSV2 infection. Receiving a negative test is going to indicate that the virus wasn’t isolated but it doesn’t definitively rule out that the virus is present. The reason for this is that is that the specimen might not have taken in a portion of the blood that contains an active replication of the virus or if the sample wasn’t transported correctly. Also there could be no detectable viable virus which could result in a false negative.
The presence of the antibodies would indicate an active or more recent infection. With a significant increase of antibodies through the comparison of convalescent and acute samples is what helps to show that. Negative HSV antibodies mean that it’s highly unlikely that the person has been exposed to HSV. It could also mean that the body simply hasn’t had the time yet to produce the HSV antibodies.
Additional Information to Know
The potentially life threatening or most serious of the infections are those that occur in newborns that are infected during the birthing process. The other group would be those individuals that are immune-compromised. The lesions are going to usually be longer in length and more extensive than those people that have a health immune system.
Also herpes is able to make a person more susceptible to getting the HIV virus. Also it can make those that are infected with HIV more infectious. For someone that is infected with HIV it can increase the diseases viral load. The HSV2 is a very significantly opportunistic infection in those that are afflicted with HIV. Almost 90% of the people that have HIV also have a co infection of HSV2.
Finally, HSV in concert with HPV infection has been associated to higher risks of the development of cervical cancer.
herpes worried
recently i was with a woman on several occassions we were fooling around no unprotected sex though. we were grinding on eachother with clothes on and on another occassion with boxers and panties on then one day i wound up laying on top of her buttocks skin to skin humping her for a few seconds. at no time did i come into contact with her vaginal area. and that was because we were taken precaution of not having unprotected intercourse. however recently i was with her and things got intense and i wound up putting a condom on and entering her from the back in the doggy style position, but she pulled away because she said i was to hugh for her. anyway i just took off the condom and ceased all attempts and just left...at the moment we were waiting for her results because we were in talks about building a relationship and she got her results back yesterday and she tested positive for hsv 2. i know i took a risk and i just need some advice on this matter what are my chances of me contracting it. i read that in most cases people symptoms occurre within the first 2 to 20 days upon contracting the hsv 2. its been over a month from the first episode and now its been a week since the last incident. i been constantly checking myself down there looking for anything. i understand that a small portion of people dont have any symptoms when contracting hsv 2 and thats why i will get tested in a month. but can someone please give me some advice, if i fall in the bunch of people who get symptoms upon exposure and i dont have any out break within that time period i know its not 100%, but is it a good sign that more than likely that im ok. im still getting tested even though so i can have a sense of relief...please some one respond asap.
It's unlikely you have it. If
It's unlikely you have it. If you didn't come into any contact and were wearing a condom chances are slim to none. When you're wearing a condom there's a chance of getting it around the base of the penis where the condom doesn't cover but it sounds like you didn't even get very far at all and those chances are slimmer. You probably got off lucky.
respond
i fully entered her with the condom on, and when i pulled back to procceed she pulled away quickly. that was it...
your advice
is it a good sign that if in the next 10 days i dont experience anything more than likely im ok? i understand that in most cases people have some sort of symptoms within the first 3 to 20 days of being exposed. i been looking down there constantly even though i honestly believe im ok...please give me advice on this matter...its been 8 days now.
It's rather unlikely that
It's rather unlikely that you've gotten it. You could proceed with caution until some time has gone by for further sexual encounters if it will help you ease your mind. With the little time and the fact that there wasn't even complete insertion where the parts of the penis where the condom doesn't cover entered you're probably safe. I can't say 100% but I'll say 99%.
Thank You dr. matthew
today she seen her doctor and he said that she was exposed to someone who had the herpes thats why she test positive for type 2. and that she didnt have the virus. i dont understand that one cause i clearly see that she tested positive for type 2 what does that mean? if i kissed her on her buttocks several times and she gave me "oral for about 5 seconds" if she was exposed to type 2 genital herpes could she give it to me through her performing oral on me...whats the risk factor? and if i kissed her on her buttocks whats the risk of me catching it??? you are a life saver and thank you for helping me out mentally and emotionally i am stressed out...
i asked her did she ever felt
i asked her did she ever felt any sores on her buttocks or pain she said never, nor on her mouth. whats the difference from type 1 & 2? i know type 1 is oral herpes. and type two is genital herpes. if your type 2 can you transmit it by performing oral sex?
Oral herpes and genital
Oral herpes and genital herpes are two totally separate things. If she gave you oral and she's not been infected on her ass before than you made it out ok. I don't really understand her diagnosis explanation but if you don't have any future relations with her you really don't have anything to worry about.
Condoms and herpes??
What I've read is tottaly different. It said that you could get it with a condom on. http://yourstdhelp.com/herpes.html is that information wrong?
