Cold sore on the cheek?

My 16 y/o daughter developed a small pimple-size red mark on her cheek two weeks ago...in fact, we just assumed it was a pimple. It didn't hurt or itch but probably looked more like a mosquito bite than a pimple. In the past 2 weeks it has never gone away or even gotten bigger until two days ago. The lymph nodes behind her ear enlarged and also in her neck below the jaw. The mark doubled yesterday, and doubled again this morning. It has never blistered, drained or hurt/itched. Her pain is from the swollen lymph nodes, which she puts on the level of 8/10 behind her ear and 6/10 on her face and neck (but only if you touch it).

I took her to our family practice clinic today and a PA saw her very briefly, declared a cold sore, and put her on antibiotics and motrin (the Army's cure-all).

I have never heard of herpes on the cheek but certainly never heard of it being there for 2 weeks with no eruption or change other than size.

I have the same thing on my right cheek, it seems strange because i've always had cold sores but never before on my face

cheek herpes

I have had herpes on my cheek almost my whole life. The first time it came up I was 8. It took a long time to diagnose since it is very uncommon. I would persist and go to different doctors if you can. Try going to a dermatologist and having a biopsy done to be sure. It is an uncomfortable procedure, but it is important to know if you have herpes or not.

In the meanwhile there are some good products over the counter, like abreva. It usually shortens my outbreak time by half. I also do as my grandma suggested and steep a tea bag and place it on the blisters to dry them out. I also take 3,000 mg of L-Lysine during an outbreak. Obviously keep it clean and wash your hands before and after touching.

Incidentally, I never get it on my lips, eyes or nose like other people say, only on my left cheek.

Good luck and don't stress. It's not the end of the world. It is estimated that 90% of the population carries HSV-1 by the time they reach 50. It won't kill you or cause you any severe problems. It can be much worse!

on the cheek

Please help me if you can , about 5 days ago I had the same thing appear on my left cheek as you described it .. At first it looked like a mosiquiti bite or a pimple it did go down in size a bit but is still there and seems to look as if it may have a small blister but I cannot quite tell I am scared to touch it as it may spread .. I should have mentioned that I DO HAVE hsv 1 BUT NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS ..
I am scared that it is going to spread . I only a week ago had a bad fever blister below my lip and I have been taking my medicine everyday for the last 3 weeks due to the fever blister .. I am very self consious and imbarrassed when I get a cold sore , now this .. I keep feeling like I am getting tingling in my eye itching on my face I am hoping I am just paranoid and I did not spread anything ... Did you ever find out if this was Herpes that your daughter had ? Devistated

Thanks

Thank you...yes, I felt a little fobbed off! I figured it was some sort of an infection because of the grossly enlarged lymph nodes and the antibiotics have seemed to do the trick. We had no way of knowing whether the red mark was associated with the swollen lymph nodes, but both the swelling and the mark have responded to the antibiotics.

I have a referral to dermatology, however the mark will be gone before the Army sees her. I guess I should be glad that I have health care coverage...but it is a little hard to deal with the Army's system at times. You seldom see a real doctor and I often worry about the quality of care that we receive.

Very unlikely

Hi, and welcome!

It sounds highly unlikely to me that this has anything to do with Oral Herpes. Very unlikely indeed.

However, I'm not a doctor.

Actually it's quite common. Oral Herpes can travel quite far from the mouth area, it can even erupt around the nose or eyes in some circumstances.

I think you should take her back, and insist on seeing a doctor rather than their PA. Herpes simplex 1 or 2 will generally last about a week and there will certainly be a blister/scab at the latter stage of the process.

We'd love to have it in this thread, please email it to me at webmaster@herpesdoctor.com and I'll put it in your message above. Perhaps we will even enable picture uploads in the forums, seems like a good idea ;-)

Please let us know how this pans out and do ensure that she sees the doctor, it sounds rather like you were 'fobbed off' to me.

Regards

Jack

location

I should add that the mark is about 1/2 inch from the earlobe in a horizontal line from it. I realize the cheek encompasses a large area so I thought I should clarify that it is nowhere near the mouth.
